Dr Modi Hlobo: Trailblazing Chartered Accountant and Educator Inspiring the Next Generation
Dr. Modi Hlobo, a highly accomplished Chartered Accountant (CA) (SA), credits her time at St Martin's School for sparking her passion for accounting. It was her Accounting teacher, Mr Quesnell, who first ignited her interest in the subject, setting her on a path to academic and professional excellence. This early inspiration laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in both the financial and academic sectors.
After spending ten years working in financial services, Dr Modi decided to follow her passion for teaching and learning. She joined the University of Johannesburg (UJ) as a Senior Lecturer, where she has combined her expertise as a seasoned academic researcher and chartered accountant to inspire the next generation of professionals. In March 2023, she made history by becoming the first black staff member at UJ's School of Accounting to earn a PhD in Accountancy, a milestone that highlights her dedication to both her profession and her community.
Dr. Modi remains committed to empowering and uplifting others, especially young people. She believes in the philosophy of "lifting as you rise," and intends to continue coaching and mentoring the youth to help them achieve their own academic and professional goals. Through her journey, she exemplifies the power of education and the importance of giving back to the community.
