Hector Pieterson Remembered
IDuring the Eucharist on Thursday 13 July, the students listened to Antoinette Sithole’s account of the 1976 Soweto uprising when Hector Pieterson, her brother was shot by police. The story was a moving account of a day that started as a peaceful protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction and ended in tragedy.
Sam Nzima’s iconic photo, shows Sithole running alongside Mbuyisa Makhubo, a student, carrying her brother to Nzima’s car. They drove Pieterson to a nearby clinic where he was declared dead.
The photo was shared around the world and is a well-known image and reminder of Youth Day. It was an honour and a privilege to have Antoinette share her story with us.
