Celebrating Youth, Unity, and Leadership at the 2025 Youth Day Festival
Youth Day Festival Unites Students Through Sport and Celebration
On 6 and 7 June 2025, St Martin’s School once again marked Youth Day with a vibrant and meaningful two-part celebration - a student-led Eucharist service and an exciting inter-school sports festival that brought together students, families, and community members in the true spirit of unity.
The Youth Day Festival is a signature event at St Martin’s, held in honour of the historic 1976 youth uprising. With soccer, netball, and chess matches held across two jam-packed days, and a heartfelt Eucharist led by students, the event embodied both reflection and celebration - reminding everyone of the power, passion, and potential of South Africa’s youth.
Student Leaders Shine in Eucharist Service
Youth Day celebrations began with a special Eucharist service, where St Martin’s students took the lead - guiding the readings, prayers, and reflections with poise and purpose. The service served as both a spiritual anchor and a tribute to the resilience and vibrancy of young people.
“Our students led with confidence and grace,” said a staff member. “It was a proud moment to witness their sense of responsibility and reverence as they honoured the youth of 1976 and reflected on what it means to be young, free, and empowered today.”
Please Don’t Overlook This Moment: The Power of a Shared Pledge
Amid the action and excitement of the 2025 Youth Day Festival, one of the most meaningful moments happened before the first match even began. Players from all participating schools stood together to recite a shared pledge - a collective commitment to fairness, integrity, and unity. In that brief pause before competition, the festival’s deeper purpose came into focus: building character and honouring the legacy of Youth Day through respect, not just rivalry.
Before the first whistle blows, we pause to set our intention.
Through this Sportsmanship Pledge, we commit to playing with honour, treating one another with respect, and representing our schools with pride.
Let this be our promise.
As players, we honour the legacy of Youth Day by showing courage, unity, and purpose - on the field and beyond it.
We commit to playing every game with honesty and fairness, remembering that true strength is shown in integrity.
We will compete fiercely, but never forget that our opponents are also our equals, deserving of respect, dignity, and grace.
We pledge to win humbly and lose graciously, celebrating effort, learning from setbacks, and giving our best at all times.
We will lift one another up, show compassion in our conduct, and be guided by the values of service, justice, and peace.
As ambassadors of St Martin’s, we carry the spirit of the School Prayer into every match: that through our actions, Christ’s love may be seen and known.
As coaches, teachers, supporters and spectators, we commit to creating a safe, joyful and respectful environment - where sportsmanship is louder than rivalry, and every child is known, valued, and cheered on with love.
May this be more than a festival of games,
May it be a festival of growth, of joyful spirit, and of unforgettable moments.
Let’s compete with heart, support one another loudly, and make the 2025 Youth Day Festival one to remember.
Let the games begin!

A Festival Fuelled by Community and Hope
Beyond the fields and courts, the festival was alive with delicious food stalls, music, laughter, and the joyful noise of families and supporters cheering from the sidelines. Entry donations and sponsorship from Standard Bank helped bring the event to life, along with the tireless efforts of staff, parents, and volunteers.
“This festival reminds us that sport can bring us together - across backgrounds, schools, and beliefs,” said one parent. “It was more than a competition; it was a celebration of our shared hope in the next generation.”
As the 2025 Youth Day Festival came to a close, the message was clear: St Martin’s continues to honour its past while boldly empowering its future - one student, one game, and one meaningful celebration at a time.
