Dr Ronwyn Van Eeden: From Deputy Head Girl to Esteemed Medical Oncologist
Dr. Ronwyn Van Eeden (neé Masie), a proud member of the Class of 2000 at St Martin’s School, reflects fondly on her time as Deputy Head Girl. Growing up in Eldorado Park, she attended St Martin’s on an academic scholarship, where she found a nurturing environment that celebrated diversity. "I loved high school," she recalls, highlighting the close-knit and diverse group of students she shared her journey with. Her experiences there taught her to respect all religions and appreciate various cultures, fostering a love for people from different backgrounds. Dr Van Eeden is particularly grateful for the supportive teachers, such as the late Mr. Cooper, Ms. Stylianou, and Mrs Fulton, who encouraged her to reach her full potential. She also cherishes the memories of the rugby boys singing hymns at the top of their lungs in chapel every Wednesday.
After graduating from St Martin’s, Dr Van Eeden continued her academic journey, earning a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pretoria. Her medical training included an internship at Chris Hani Academic Baragwanath Hospital, followed by a year of community service in Potchefstroom. As her passion for medical care deepened, she specialised in Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, ultimately qualifying as a specialist physician. It was during this phase that Dr Van Eeden discovered her passion for oncology while working at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, leading her to pursue a fellowship in medical oncology, which she completed in 2015.
For the past seven years, Dr Van Eeden has been a dedicated medical oncologist in private practice in Rosebank, Johannesburg, where she is known for her expertise and commitment to her patients. In addition to her practice, she serves as an honorary consultant in Medical Oncology at Chris Hani Academic Hospital and previously held the role of honorary lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Wits. Her message to students finishing their matric year is one of empowerment: "Never ever doubt yourself. With consistent hard work, you can achieve anything." Dr Van Eeden’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief.
