I am Exceptionally Proud of our Matric Class of 2023 – Warren Venter, Headmaster

On behalf of the staff of St Martin’s School, I am exceptionally proud to share with you the results of our Matric Class of 2023.

Form 5

At their valediction ceremony in October last year, I awarded each of the matric students the Headmaster’s Grit Award for showing astounding resilience and tenacity throughout their high school careers. This is a class of students who not only had to endure nearly two years of learning through the COVID-19 pandemic, but also had to weather the storm of one of the school’s most turbulent times. This is the group of students who, against odds, chose to stay at St Martin’s - while many of their peers did not – knowing that they would continue to receive the excellent educational standards that St Martin’s School has come to be known for.

Their grit has paid off: we are proud to announce that not only did the Class of 2023 achieve a 100% pass rate, each of them has also qualified to study a bachelor’s degree – a 100% Bachelor Degree Pass! When one takes into consideration that we do not gate-keep, as we accept children with varying academic abilities, this is hugely impressive!

We would also like to congratulate our top achievers for 2023:

  • Sabrina Lopes: 4 distinctions (English, Business Studies, Dramatic Arts, Life Orientation)
  • Faiza Essat: 3 distinctions (English, Business Studies, Life Orientation)
  • Kieran Atti: 2 distinctions (Engineering Graphics and Design, Life Orientation)

Many of our other students also achieved personal bests in their final examinations.

While it is important to take a moment to celebrate the academic achievements of our Class of 2023, it is equally important to remind the Community that schooling, and especially schooling at St Martin’s, is about so much more than the marks on a statement of results!

The holistic development of students into balanced, well-rounded and empathetic young adults who reach their own potential continues to be a hallmark of what we do at St Martin’s, perfectly encapsulated by the following quote which is painted on one of the walls at the school:

“St Martin’s School provides a nurturing environment, encouraging the principles and virtues of good citizenship. So it is, by successful scholarship, through effective leadership, with love, labour, responsibility and mutual respect, that our students continually help to create better and more gentle communities, where they live and work.”

Finally, I firmly believe that while our students possess the raw talent and potential, these results would not have been possible without our dedicated and excellent teaching staff who have seen and nurtured the potential in each of our students during their schooling careers. It is through the hard work and dedication of our teachers that the following subjects’ averages were higher than the IEB national average: Business Studies, Computer Applications Technology, isiZulu FAL, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

However, the results are not only as an outcome of the matric teachers; they are as a result of excellent education and nurturing teachers right from the start of a student’s journey with us in Grade 000. I would therefore like to not only celebrate the students this year, but every one of the teachers at St Martin’s School – this achievement belongs to everyone!

If there was any doubt that St Martin’s School continues to offer top-class education, our 2023 results should reassure you that we certainly do!

I once again congratulate the Matric Class of 2023 for their outstanding results and look forward to seeing what our “New Pioneers” achieve in their futures.
