Nicola Lazenby: From Head Girl to Storyteller and Adventurer
Nicola Lazenby, who served as Head Girl at St Martin’s in 2006, credits her former teacher, Mrs Engela, with instilling in her a profound appreciation for the power of stories. Inspired by this early influence, she pursued a Master’s in Literature, ultimately becoming an English teacher herself. Today, Nicola harnesses the magic of storytelling not only in her writing but also in her work as a counsellor, using narratives to connect with others and facilitate healing. This blend of literature and therapy showcases her dedication to helping individuals explore their own stories and experiences.
St Martin’s played a significant role in fostering a spirit of adventure within Nicola. Her early experiences, such as participating in sports tours and an exchange programme to India, laid the groundwork for her future explorations. One of her most remarkable adventures came in 2018 when she spent four months hiking solo on the Pacific Crest Trail. These formative experiences taught her resilience and self-discovery, shaping her into the adventurous spirit she embodies today.
Among her fondest memories from her school days are the joyous moments spent singing on the bus after touch rugby matches and the late-night fun during play rehearsals, where laughter and mischief created lasting bonds. As a message to young matriculants, Nicola emphasizes that every good story features a hero embarking on a quest and facing challenges along the way. She encourages them to seek their own quests, embrace their unique magic, confront their dragons, and ultimately return transformed, ready to share the treasures they have uncovered within themselves with the world. Just by being true to themselves, they can make a meaningful impact.
