The Benefits of Boarding School: Why Parents Should Consider It

For many parents, the idea of boarding school carries a mix of curiosity, admiration, and hesitation. While the model has evolved significantly over the years, boarding still raises questions: Is my child too young? Will they cope emotionally? Will I lose touch with their daily lives?

These concerns are natural, yet research and experience increasingly highlight that boarding, done well, can be one of the most transformative experiences in a child’s educational journey. safe, and inspired to grow into their fullest potential.

Why Parents Sometimes Steer Away from Boarding

Parental hesitation usually comes down to three key fears:

Separation Anxiety

Parents worry their child will feel abandoned or homesick.

Loss of Influence

The perception that they will miss out on guiding their child’s daily growth.

Misconceptions of Boarding

Outdated stereotypes of cold dormitories and strict routines often cloud what modern boarding actually looks like - warm, family-like environments where pastoral care is central.

At St Martin’s School our Boys’ and Girls’ boarding facilities are houses connected to the school’s campus providing a home-away-from-home environment.

“At St Martin’s Boarding, we are very privileged to run boarding in houses, so the boys and girls board in a home environment. For me the biggest benefit is for the boys to have a structured environment filled with all the benefits of home” - Ms Laura Mey, Head of Boys Boarding at St Martin’s School.

The Research-Backed Benefits of Boarding

Independence and Resilience

A 2017 Australian Boarding Schools Association study found boarders often develop life skills - such as self-reliance, adaptability, and time management - earlier than day students.

Stronger Peer Bonds

Living in a close-knit community fosters lifelong friendships and collaboration skills.

Academic Support

With structured study routines and access to teachers after hours, boarders often benefit from consistent academic reinforcement.

Holistic Growth

Research from the UK’s Boarding Schools’ Association shows that boarding environments give children more access to sports, arts, and enrichment activities, contributing to balanced development.

At What Age Should a Child Begin Boarding?

The “right age” depends on both the child’s maturity and the family’s circumstances. However, educational psychologists suggest the ideal age is around ages 11–13, when children are old enough to manage routines but young enough to fully embrace community life.

Younger (8–10 years)

Some families opt for early boarding to instil independence, especially in schools with strong pastoral systems.

Middle Years (11–13 years)

Many experts see this as the ideal entry point. Children are developing socially and emotionally, and boarding offers a supportive peer environment.

Senior Years (14+)

Boarding at this stage can prepare adolescents for matric and university, especially if they crave academic structure or extracurricular opportunities.

Ultimately, readiness is individual - some children thrive earlier, while others benefit from starting later. St Martin’s offers boarding from Grade 7 which is an optimal time for entry into boarding.

"Our home is a nurturing environment where every child, regardless of their background, feels welcomed and supported. As the Boarding Mom and a qualified teacher, I dedicate an hour and a half each evening to help with homework. This personalised support ensures our girls stay focused on their studies, which is reflected in their excellent academic performance." - Miss Selina Mokgatle, Head of Girls Boarding.

A Modern Approach to Boarding

Today’s boarding schools are no longer about separation from family, but about partnership with parents. Technology allows regular video calls and updates; weekly boarding enables families to maintain strong family bonds, while termly boarding provides further opportunities for self-reliance and even more independence. Schools usually provide weekend outings for boarders to enjoy. Boarding should not be seen as a replacement for home, but rather as an extension of it - a nurturing environment where children grow academically, socially, and personally.

Final Thought

Boarding is not for every child, but for many it is a life-changing opportunity. With the right age entry and supportive school environment, boarding fosters resilience, independence, and friendships that last a lifetime. Parents who once hesitated often reflect later that boarding gave their child exactly the preparation they needed for adulthood.
