The Hidden Strain: School Holidays and South Africa’s Middle-Income Working Parents

In South Africa’s middle-income households, the dual-income model is no longer a luxury -it’s a necessity. With rising living costs, school fees, transport, and healthcare expenses, most families rely on both parents working full-time to maintain financial stability. But when school holidays arrive, this balancing act becomes a high-wire performance.

The School Holiday Dilemma

For working parents, school holidays present a logistical and emotional challenge. Who will care for the children while they work? How can they ensure their kids are safe, engaged, and not glued to screens all day?

Recent research reveals the depth of this stress:

  • 62% of working parents in South Africa say school holiday childcare is a significant challenge.
  • 61% report elevated stress levels during holidays due to juggling work and childcare responsibilities.
  • Lack of flexible work arrangements compounds the issue, with 33% of parents needing to take extra leave and 29% experiencing imbalanced childcare duties at home.

This stress is especially acute for parents of Pre-Prep and early education children, who require constant supervision and structured activities. Unlike older children who might entertain themselves or attend short camps, younger kids need nurturing environments that mirror the safety and stimulation of school.

The Financial Strain

Holiday care options - private camps, babysitters, or extended daycare - often come with a hefty price tag. For middle-income families already stretched thin, these costs can feel insurmountable. Add to that the emotional toll of worrying about safety, screen time, and social development, and it’s clear: school holidays are not a break for parents.

A New Solution: St Martin’s Pre-Prep Holiday Care

Recognizing this gap, St Martin’s Pre-Prep phase has introduced a holiday care programme tailored for working parents. This initiative offers:

  • Safe, structured care during school holidays
  • Age-appropriate activities for young children
  • Familiar staff and environment, reducing anxiety for both parents and children

This is more than a convenience - it’s a lifeline. By providing continuity of care, St Martin’s helps parents maintain their work commitments without compromising their children’s wellbeing.
